This course is an introduction to the UCB philosophy on sketch comedy, specifically using "the game" to write short comedic scenes. Each week students will engage in writing exercises that will explore different sketch formats. Students will be exposed to different methods for turning funny ideas into even funnier written sketches. Students will leave the class with an understanding of popular sketch formats and a portfolio of writing.

No prior sketch writing experience is necessary -- the only requirement for this class is a desire to write and learn. Students should have access to a computer and printer and be prepared to work outside of class, preparing sketches for presentation in every class. Students will be required to see two live sketch shows before the end of the course.

Class Size: 12 Students
Students should have access to a computer and stable, robust internet access, webcam & microphone.

There is work outside of class, preparing sketches for presentation in every class and viewing sketch videos. This online course uses Google Classroom and Google Meet programs to conduct live sessions with your instructor and fellow students.

Frank Garcia-Hejl, teacher

Frank Garcia-Hejl Frank Garcia-Hejl studied improv and sketch comedy at Four Day Weekend Theater in Texas before moving to New York in 2007 to study at UCBT.

Frank is currently a teacher/performer/director at UCBT in Los Angeles and a writer and actor in the sketch group SQUADRON.  

You might be familiar with his work as a writer and actor for Broadway Video's Latino internet channel Más Mejor or may have seen him on USA's First Impressions with Dana Carvey. He performed in the 2018 CBS Showcase and returned in 2020 to write for it. He was named one of New Faces: Characters for the Montreal Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in 2016 and also one of Comedy Central's Comics to Watch 2015. He has written and appeared in material for NBC, Netflix, Hulu, Comedy Central, IFC, Shudder, MTV, TruTV, USA and A&E. He currently co-wrote and co-starred in a segment in the upcoming comedy/horror anthology movie Scare Package.
