Students will learn the fundamentals of long-form improvisation including: agreement, active listening, playing characters, playing truthfully and to the top of your intelligence and group mind.

Understanding the fundamentals will be achieved through exercises and scene work in class, seeing improv shows at UCB Theatre and reading the UCB Comedy Improvisation Manual.

Students are required to see at least 2 improvised shows at UCB Theatre before the end of the course.

Course meets for 8 sessions, each 3 hours long.

Students will take part in a class performance, generally held at UCB Theatre.

Improv 101 students are required to acquire the Upright Citizens Brigade Comedy Improvisation Manual by class #2. The Manual can be purchased for non-refundable $25 at UCB Theatre, UCB Training Center NY, or

Matt Newell

Matt Newell is a improvisor, actor and writer from Youngsville, NC. He began studying improv at Comedy Sportz in Chapel Hill, NC and then continued at The Upright Citizens Brigade when he moved to Los Angeles.

His has written and performed several shows at UCB including: Smart & Brave, Hubble Telescope and Kid Grift's Apartment Party. He has also been in several videos for Funny or Die including: Fiat: Backseat Italians, Cheech & Chong's History of 420, Children's Theater Critic with Alfred Molina, Dudes-N-Bros Talking Points, The Exorcism of Sarah Jo (Writer/Performer) as well as videos for the UCB Beta Teams Sneak Thief and Muddleberry.

TV credits include: Spots for Statefarm Insurance, IHOP, Fiat, Stifel Nicolaus, and NHTSA: Click It or Ticket.
