Students will learn the fundamentals of long-form improvisation including: agreement, active listening, playing characters, playing truthfully and to the top of your intelligence and group mind.

Understanding the fundamentals will be achieved through exercises and scene work in class, seeing improv shows at UCB Theatre and reading the UCB Comedy Improvisation Manual.

Students are required to see at least 2 improvised shows at UCB Theatre before the end of the course.

Course meets for 8 sessions, each 3 hours long.

Students will take part in a class performance, generally held at UCB Theatre.

Improv 101 students are required to acquire the Upright Citizens Brigade Comedy Improvisation Manual by class #2. The Manual can be purchased for non-refundable $25 at UCB Theatre, UCB Training Center NY, or

James III, teacher

James III James III is an actor and writer from Akron, Ohio. He loves dinosaurs, time travel, and Sour Patch Kids. James was a staff writer on Adam Ruins Everything/TruTV, and featured as a New Face in the 2018 Just for Laughs Characters Showcase, a performer/writer in the 2018 CBS Diversity Sketch Comedy Showcase, and received the 2017 NBC/UCBT Diversity Scholarship.

He co-hosts Black Men Can't Jump [in Hollywood] podcast and is a member of the comedy group, Astronomy Club. He currently appears on Characters Welcome at UCB LA and performed on Harold Night with Some Kid and Maude Night with Charles, Roanoke, and Moriarty at UCB NY.

But you probably know him from his dramatic three lines on Law & Order: SVU in 2011.
