Students will learn the fundamentals of long-form improvisation including: agreement, active listening, playing characters, playing truthfully and to the top of your intelligence and group mind.

Understanding the fundamentals will be achieved through exercises and scene work in class, seeing improv shows at UCB Theatre and reading the UCB Comedy Improvisation Manual.

Students are required to see at least 2 improvised shows at UCB Theatre before the end of the course.

Course meets for 8 sessions, each 3 hours long.

Students will take part in a class performance, generally held at UCB Theatre.

Improv 101 students are required to acquire the Upright Citizens Brigade Comedy Improvisation Manual by class #2. The Manual can be purchased for non-refundable $25 at UCB Theatre, UCB Training Center NY, UCBstore.com or Amazon.com.

Oscar Montoya, teacher

Oscar Montoya is an actor, comedian, and hip hop dancer living in Los Angeles. He was born in a small town in Colombia and lived in New York for a spell, where he was a performer and a faculty member in both the Magnet Theater and The People's Improv Theater. Oscar has appeared in several national commercials (Lowe's, Pizza Hut, Cheerios) and various videos for College Humor, MTVOther and Buzzfeed. Oscar currently performs at UCB with Skyjammer, a freestyle rap improv team, and on Harold night. He is also a performer and director for the arts education and media company Story Pirates.
