Students will learn the fundamentals of long-form improvisation including: agreement, active listening, playing characters, playing truthfully and to the top of your intelligence and group mind.

Understanding the fundamentals will be achieved through exercises and scene work in class, seeing improv shows at UCB Theatre and reading the UCB Comedy Improvisation Manual.

Students are required to see at least 2 improvised shows at UCB Theatre before the end of the course.

Course meets for 8 sessions, each 3 hours long.

Students will take part in a class performance, generally held at UCB Theatre.

Improv 101 students are required to acquire the Upright Citizens Brigade Comedy Improvisation Manual by class #2. The Manual can be purchased for non-refundable $25 at UCB Theatre, UCB Training Center NY, UCBstore.com or Amazon.com.

Sarah Claspell, teacher

Sarah is an actress, writer and improvisor who has been studying at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre since 2006. She has been seen on Harold Night with the improv teams Dybbuk, Monstro & Cardinal Redbird, on Maude Night with the sketch teams High Treason, Neighbor Boy and The Get Go, and on the character team Characters Welcome. She currently performs with Cardinal Redbird on Tuesday nights at 11pm at UCB Franklin! Sarah also performs with the Asian superteam Voltron at the monthly showcase Asian AF.

Past shows at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre (in both New York and Los Angeles) include Walter White's Amazing Blue Crystal Meth, A Harry Potter Musical!, This Is About Smith, Cool Show for Teen Girlz, Newsadoozies, The New York Talent Academy Showcase, The Macroscene, and many more.

Small screen writing and acting credits include Drunk History, Comedy Bang! Bang!, Tales of Titans, Vag Magazine and a whole slew of other shows and commercials.

Sarah moved to Los Angeles after sampling all the pizza in New York. She has trained with members of the Royal Shakespeare Company and is a member of the Loft Ensemble Theatre. Sarah is obsessed with all things cute and runs the website wellthatsadorable.com
