Students will learn the fundamentals of long-form improvisation including: agreement, active listening, playing characters, playing truthfully and to the top of your intelligence and group mind.

Understanding the fundamentals will be achieved through exercises and scene work in class, seeing improv shows at UCB Theatre and reading the UCB Comedy Improvisation Manual.

Students are required to see at least 2 improvised shows at UCB Theatre before the end of the course.

Course meets for 8 sessions, each 3 hours long.

Students will take part in a class performance, generally held at UCB Theatre.

Improv 101 students are required to acquire the Upright Citizens Brigade Comedy Improvisation Manual by class #2. The Manual can be purchased for non-refundable $25 at UCB Theatre, UCB Training Center NY, UCBstore.com or Amazon.com.

Class meets Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday from 11am-2pm   
 
Due to the nature of the intensive class, make-ups are much harder to schedule.

Deborah Tarica, teacher

Deborah Tarica

Deborah Tarica was born and raised in Los Angeles, and took a brief hiatus from her small-town life to earn a degree in film studies from UC Santa Barbara. After college, Deborah worked for many years as a casting director for television.

She began performing at The Upright Citizens Brigade Theater in 2007, and since then has had the pleasure of performing on Harold night with the teams Delicatessen and The Great War. She also has performed with Rough Cut: The Improvised Movie, The Thanksgiving Feast Show, The OkCupid Show, Entertainment Hollywood, The Faculty and many more. She has also created many shows performed to sold out crowds at the UCB Theater including: The Valentine's Day Singles Mixer, Snow Day!, UCB's Spring Break, Election Night and many more. She was a member of the UCB Touring Company and has been teaching at UCB since 2012. 

She can currently be seen performing with ASSEMBLY at UCB Sunset, and hosts a monthly show with her two-person team, Puzzles, in the Inner Sanctum called REQUIRED VIEWING.

Deborah has developed and written a pilot for Disney XD. She is a columnist for Hello Giggles and has written and can be seen in many Funny or Die Exclusive videos. She is a friend to all dogs (especially her own) and never has less than two types of fancy cheeses in her refrigerator at any given moment.
