Introduction to Clowning and Physical Comedy
Clowning is one of the oldest
forms of performance, yet its roots are as popular now as they ever have
been. Modern super-stars, like Jim Carey, Jamie Fox, Randall Park,
Sacha Baron Cohen and Tiffany Haddish all employ clowning in their most
The first four weeks will be group
clown work, with individual performance in Physical Comedy and how to build
game from specific physical behavior. Specifically applying the concepts of
escalation, rhythm and repetition to comedic physical turns/bits (takes, drops,
distraction) The last four weeks we’ll begin to
explore our clown’s connection with their audience. This is group clown work
centered in breath, vulnerability, presence and impulse; with individual
performances adding this to physical turns/bits. (entrances, fashion show,
physical turn/bit, mapping the mundane over the bizarre).
This online course uses Google Classroom and Google Meet programs to conduct live sessions with your instructor and fellow students.

Tyler Hayes Stilwill
Tyler is a teacher and interdisciplinary artist in Los Angeles. Tyler has performed at regional theaters around the country, and is featured in the web-series “StayingTogether”
(stayingtogethercomedy.com). At UCB Sunset, Tyler was active in their Spank program, directing (Donkey) and performing in (Black Woman White Man), and in the inner-sanctum, with their partner Dashia Magee, was a three time “Sketch-Slam” champion. Tyler has been teaching acting, clowning and physical comedy for 15 years, and presently teaches Scene Study, Voice, Movement and Clowning at the New York Film Academy.
