The Basics of Writing Half-Hour Comedy with Eric Zicklin

Anyone can see what makes a bad sitcom bad, but what makes the good ones good?  And how can you get closer to writing a good one yourself?

The best way is to start with the basics, by learning these eight simple truths that span the entire writing process from character-creation to story-breaking to joke-polishing.  Led by Eric Zicklin,  a 20-year veteran of sitcom staffs (Frasier, Hot in Cleveland, Younger) this class will equip you with the tools of the trade and offer techniques for improvement on your own.  From there all you’ll need to reach writing stardom is effort, talent, and luck!

Please note: this is a lecture course with a Q&A. Each session will include an hour-long talk on one of Eric’s “writing truths” followed by a discussion. Students will not be asked to write during this course.

Please note all tuition payments include a $35 non-refundable registration processing fee.

Class meets in the Inner Sanctum Theater.

Eric Zicklin, teacher

Eric Zicklin Eric Zicklin is constantly writing on sitcom staffs, sometimes for lousy shows and sometimes for splendid ones (such as Dharma & Greg, Frasier, Hot in Cleveland, and, currently, TVLand’s Younger).  Loaded with firsthand experience working for many different showrunners, Eric knows half-hour narrative television writing.  It’s the rest of the world that confuses him.
