Each master class course offered at this level is instructor-driven. Students will get to study the Harold and related performance pieces at an advanced level and will receive in-depth personal feedback about their own performance and progress as improvisers.
Students will perform in two class performances at the UCB Theatre – once halfway through the course and once at the end. Graduation is also contingent upon students seeing at least two improvised shows at the UCB Theater before the end of the course.Class Size 16 students. IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THE REFUND POLICY FOR ADVANCED STUDY / IMPROV 501 HAS CHANGED. THERE ARE NO REFUNDS STARTING 24 HOURS BEFORE THE FIRST SESSION (OR A FULL BUSINESS DAY FOR WEEKEND CLASSES).

Advanced Harold Techniques and Scenework with Billy Merritt
In this class you will be challenged with different kinds of Harolds to help your understanding of the game of scene, as well as the Harold itself. Classes will be dedicated to longer scenes, "Weird" Harolds, and exercises geared towards specific elements of the Harold. These exercises include: Scenes in silence, French scenes, Ghosting, and the Garfunkle.
Class meets at The Complex in Hollywood
Admission to Advanced Study / Improv 501 is granted on review of previous class performance. If you interested in taking this class please EMAIL la@ucbcomedy.com with the subject "MERRITT WED IMPROV 501". Even if you have received permission to register for previous courses, you still need to send an email and wait for a reply. Billy Merritt, Teacher
Billy Merritt has been with the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre since its inception, teaching, directing, and performing. He has performed in over 50 different shows at the theater including ASSSSCAT, Killgore, Harold Night, The Real Real World, Immortal Kombat, Robot TV, the Third Degree and Gigantic Man. He has developed such shows as Piledriver, The Sunshine Gang, Brain Town and Rat Radio. Billy was one of the founding members of The SWARM, and improvised most recently in The Stepfathers and with Michael Delaney in Omelette Vision.
Billy's television credits include MTV's Boiling Points, VH1's Best Week Ever, VH1's Sledgehammer, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, Law and Order: Criminal Intent, Comedy Central's Straight Plan for the Gay Man, Bravo's Great Things About..., and most importantly, the Upright Citizens Brigade TV show.
Billy is currently working with the Premiere Radio Network on a new morning comedy radio show called Punch Line Live.
